Have you ever considered how important it is to take care of yourself? It seems obvious, but with the hustle and bustle we’re accustomed to these days it’s so easy to forget that both our bodies and minds need consistent and high-quality nourishment.
I went through a period where I completely forgot about taking care of myself. I’m not talking about forgetting to floss once in a while. I’m talking about completely lacking self-care rituals in any form. I got so caught up in working and taking care of other people that I realized I came last in almost every instance.
I’m talking late nights (2 a.m. was an early bedtime), way too many cups of coffee way too late in the day, no exercise, no mental stimulation, and a lot of self-placed guilt. I was working all day and all night with no regard to the impact it was having on my body.
Even if I was sitting still, I was internally plotting ways to get things done and what I needed to do next.
It felt like my brain never turned off. It felt like I was always behind, always missing something important.
After taking a (big) step back and examining myself, I realized that I needed to change something. I mean, I make self-care products and I was forgetting to practice it myself?
How much sense does that make?
So, I’ve been giving it a real effort these past few weeks. I have been intentionally putting myself first at least once or twice a day with some simple self-care rituals.
I still feel like my brain is lacking an off switch sometimes, but it’s a process. Change doesn’t happen overnight! So if you’ve been lacking self-care rituals up until this point, have no fear! It’s not too late to start.
If you’re looking for small ways to show yourself some love and care, look no further. Here are 10 easy self-care rituals that can help you add some pep in your step.
- Do one thing just because it makes you happy
It doesn’t have to be something complicated. Whether it’s an overpriced beverage from your favorite coffee shop, taking a walk in the fresh air, or reading for three hours straight, pick something that you know will keep your spirits up.

- Have a home spa
Your body deserves pampering from time to time. Gather your bath bomb and bubble bar stash and run the ultimate home-spa! Whether you have a tub or shower, you can find fun products to help you feel cared for and refreshed. Nothing feels better than hopping out of the tub with magically soft skin and a squeaky clean body.
- Unplug for a bit
Social media can be toxic to the mind and soul, especially if you find yourself mindlessly scrolling for ages upon ages. A super easy self-care ritual I’ve been attempting is unplugging from my phone for set periods throughout the day. I set it somewhere and I don’t pick it up again until a set time. Be present in your own life and surroundings without the noise of everyone else. It’s freeing!
- Spend time alone doing something that recharges you
Alone time is paramount to keeping our wits about us. If you have to, schedule it in your planner like you would an appointment or due date! Pick a time and activity and stick to it. You’ll feel accomplished when you get to check it off your list, too!
- Declutter your space
I don’t know about you, but physical clutter in my living and work space really clouds my mind. Pick something you know you have an excess off and choose three pieces to let go of. Donate them or toss them!
- Schedule play time
Take five minutes every now throughout your day to day routine and then and do whatever! Doodle, listen to an uplifting song, or read a poem. Mental breaks throughout the day can really help keep your mind working at its best.
- Take deep breaths and relax your body
Ever notice when you’re stressed, parts of your body might clench up? Take a few minutes to step away and relax your body and breathing. Start with your toes and work your way up to your head and slowly relax each part of your body as you go.
- Give yourself a compliment
If you’re busy and constantly forgetting yourself, you might start to forget what you even like about yourself (I know I did). Find a time each day to praise yourself. Remind yourself about your positive qualities to help you get out of the negative mindset you may have.
I love candles for when I need a comforting, calming smell.
- Smell a good smell
Pick your favorite candle, bath bomb, sweater, or snack and give it a good sniff. It might sound strange, but sometimes taking in your favorite smell can do wonders for your mood.
- Discover the beauty in the world
Use your daily commute or some downtime and find five things in everyday life that you find beautiful. It’s easy to take the simple things for granted when we’re stressed. Don’t forget the everyday miracles.
